Are You An Expressionista? Find Your Fashion Persona
You have a style. No really, you do! When it comes to fashion, we all gravitate towards a given “look” that tells the world whether we’d rather be partying, hiking or…doing more shopping. And while we don’t like to judge a book by its cover, first impressions are important and pretty much unavoidable. In fact, letting people in on your personality through your wardrobe is an effective way to “brand” yourself. Think Ellen DeGeneres’s quirky love of sneakers or Sofia Vergara’s vivacious vixen-y look on the runway. We associate each of these equally talented and interesting women with a certain look that totally works for her.
So, all this begs the question: What’s your signature style? The hip and helpful new book, Expressionista (by Jackie Walker and Pamela Dittmer McKuen), breaks the style world into five “Fashion Personas.” Each persona has its own unique form of expression, and chances are you fall into one or a combo of a couple of them. According to Expressionista, clothes shouldn’t be another cause for stress or fitting in—they should be fun, and a way to show your peers what makes you uniquely you.
Read on for a quick rundown of the five fashion personas, then head back to your closet. Because the key is to find your own true persona—and embrace it!
Without further ado…
You didn’t like wearing fussy dresses when you were five, and you still don’t. You’re at home in a pair of Chuck Taylors and jeans, and you like it that way. Makeup is minimal; bling is virtually nonexistent. But just because you like to rock a more casual look doesn’t mean you don’t do it in style. And the natural girl loves to be seen for exactly who she is—gotta respect that!
Celeb Inspiration: Michelle Williams; Ellen DeGeneres
Does the thought of people talking about your prom dress long after prom appeal to you? Do you like to make a splash—for better or worse? You just may be a “dramatic.” Boring clothes are not your thing; clothes should be a statement. You are all about accessories, attitude and being noticed. We applaud your ability to walk into a room and command attention. That takes confidence, and you’ve got it!
Celeb Inspiration: Gwen Stefani; Katy Perry
Are you the type that’s never met a ruffle she didn’t like? Do you wish the “Bibbity Bobbity Boutique” had existed at Disneyworld when you were a kid? You’re a romantic…at least in the fashion department. Embrace your feminine style, and have fun with small patterns and pretty details. Hit the sale rack at Anthropologie and go crazy. Then finish the look with some perfume and dainty jewelry. You’ll feel oh-so-girly, and you’ll feel all the better for it.
Celeb Inspiration: Taylor Swift
Tasteful and traditional, you’d rather own some really high quality staple pieces than mountains of trendy pieces of poorer quality. You’ll always look appropriate, and you’re just fine with the fact that your clothes aren’t discussed or recently seen on the runway. You’re more at home in J. Crew than H&M, and your clothes will stand the test of time. Sometimes you’ll jazz up your classic look with accessories or jewelry. And, hey—you’re in good company if the celeb inspiration is any indication on this one!
Celeb Inspiration: Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton
Congratulations. Everyone envies your closet. You’re kind of like the “dramatic” in that you want to be noticed. But in this case, you want to be the first to wear a trend, and you relish the copycat phenomenon that follows you. You’ve mastered the art of staying up on trends without breaking the bank, and you’ve got a constantly rotating wardrobe to show for it. We salute you. Now can we borrow that shirt?
Celeb Inspiration: Blake Lively; Rachel Bilson
