Remembering Sally Ride
This week, we said goodbye to physisist and astronaut Sally Ride, who died at the age of 61. Dr. Ride was the first American woman in space, and she continued to inspire young people — especially girls — to pursue science education through her organization, Sally Ride Science.
“A key part of our corporate mission is to make a difference in girls’ lives, and in society’s perceptions of their roles in technical fields,” reads the organization’s website. Ride also wrote books to encourage kids to study science, such as Exploring Our Solar System.
We love this quote by this inspiring pioneer, who first traveled into space in 1983: “All adventures, especially into new territory, are scary.” At Heart of Gold, we are grateful to Dr. Ride for feeling the fear — but continuing to pursue her dreams anyway. In doing so, she led the way for the rest of us.
